New Coach Could Be Grand Slam

Long-time varsity baseball coach and math teacher Bill Goodman has stepped down from his coaching position and Assistant Coach Sean Davis will step to the plate. Goodman will continue to teach math here at Sherwood.

After nearly 30 years of coaching baseball, leading the Warrior baseball team to the State Championship game in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010, winning the latter two state championships, Goodman is resigning from his baseball career at Sherwood. He says he will not miss some of those tougher responsibilities of the job. “All the other things were starting to get to me. Field prep, rule changes … won’t miss those rainy days in the gym for practice,” said Goodman.

Davis, a current physical education teacher and also a Sherwood alumnus, played for Goodman as a Warrior during his time at Sherwood, earning 2000 All-Gazette honors as a senior. Davis has been Goodman’s assistance coach since 2008. “[Davis] has a lot of enthusiasm, focus, knows the game,” said Goodman. “He’s a young guy here for the long haul.”

“Me and [Goodman] had talked about it for a couple of months. We knew he was going to step down; it was just a matter of time. He was ready to move on and I think it was just assumed I would step up,” said Davis. “I could have been assistant coach for another ten years and still be happy.”
