Indoor Track Season Gets Underway

By Jack Armstrong ’15

On December 6, indoor track competed at their first countywide meet of the season at the Prince Georges Sports Complex in Landover. The girls’ team placed 5th out of 17 teams, while the boys’ team finished 6th out of 19.

Many Sherwood varsity athletes are returning to indoor again this year for what they hope will lead both the boys’ and the girls’ teams to states. Last year, at the Maryland 4A State Championships the girls’team placed 16th out of 35 teams. No male athletes qualified for states.

Senior Rufus Settles had outstanding finishes in the 55 and 300 meter dashes, placing second in both events with times of 6.65 in the 55 meter and 37.72 in the 300 meter race. Seniors Dotun Oseni-Adegbite and Zach Stubblefield placed fifth and sixth in the 12lb shot put, throwing 37-10.50 and 35-09.75.

Additionally, senior Tiffany Woods dominated the 500 meter finishing first with a time of 1:22.05. Woods frequently posts leading times in her events and is one of Sherwood’s top athletes.

“My goals are to run track in college at D1 level, hopefully. Also I’d like to decrease my times,” said Woods. As she looks to finish her senior year strong she says she struggles to balance school work, social life and track, but will continue improving her times in her events, particularly the 500 meter.

After competing on December 9 at the Prince George’s Complex the Warriors return to the Complex on December 30 for their third and final countywide meet. On January 10 the Warriors will compete in the Montgomery Invitational also at the Prince George’s Sports Complex.
